Globular cluster stars in the halo field: what do they tell us?

Sarah Martell
UNSW School of Physics, Sydney, Australia

Stars escape from globular clusters through a variety of processes, and they can be identified post-escape using chemical tagging. This approach relies on the light-element anomalies in globular clusters as a unique and ubiquitous property of globular clusters, and has been used by multiple authors to investigate how much mass could have been contributed to the halo field by globular clusters. However, there are a number of weaknesses in this area as it stands: the underlying assumptions are worth questioning, the observed versus predicted distribution of escapees are quite different, and followup observations have found that candidates are not always true globular cluster escapees. I will describe ongoing work to expand the set of globular cluster escapees using GALAH survey data, and outline what we stand to learn by building a clearer picture of the early formation and long-term evolution of globular clusters.
